a series of devices to manipulate in real-time the sound source’s movements in a multichannel surround system.
The project is based on the development of new software and hardware devices to generate spatial movements in order to control, in real-time, the position of sounds in a performing space. The developed devices will improve the dynamics of multichannel live performances, open new artistic expressive possibilities, new performative approaches for artists who want to experiment with multichannel systems, new aural experiences for audiences unfamiliar with experiencing live music in an immersive listening environment.
We are interested in analyzing and improving the relationship between real-time sound spatialization and digital technology. This project is research, development, and experimentation in spatial sound technology which opens up new possibilities to create, perform and experience sound spatially. These software technologies introduce new forms of integrated spatial music performance and sound design and enable a creative practice of space and movement in music.
Researching and experimenting in spatial audio, a topic with a growing interest from both technical and artistic disciplines but where the online or real-time sound spatialization with digital technology is still not fully exploited. This project aims to create something useful to the artistic community, bringing new approaches and possibilities to musical, performative, listening experiences.
The main collaborating institute is the STEIM foundation, that will host us for the developing phase of the project. Fedde our consultant, the creator of the Multichannel Pentacle System, and as such he will assist us during the developing and optimization phase of the devices. Our goal is to bring fresh and interesting ideas and collaborate with an historical and consolidate organisation in sector like STEIM, to join the forces and keep experimenting experiment with creative applications of sound and music technology.
I've optimised the software devices to interact with specific surround systems; The first testbed is the Pentacle, a surround system of 18 speakers specifically developed for live and real-time performances. With my project of live electronics LEDEN, I've performed in Amsterdam during STEIM SUMMER PARTY ( http://steim.org/event/summer-party/ ) and Electronic Extravaganza Festival at Splendor – (http://steim.org/event/electronic-extravaganza-2018/) (https://splendoramsterdam.com/electronic-extravaganza/) using the Pentacle 15.3 Multichannel System, controlled with my MOVEMENTS devices for a multichannel performance.
